THE AMPHIBIC HOUSE

Project: experimental holiday houses  Year: 2018, Type: open international competition, 2nd prize Competition: XS - Neue Ferienhäuser Modellhaft Bauen Program: new forms of tourism combined with ideas of experimental building and living Area: 240.000m2, Architecture: Opposite Office, Benedikt Hartl Place: Saalburg-Ebersdorf, Thüringen, Germany, Client: Stiftung Baukultur Thüringen, internationale Bauausstellung Thüringen

The design addresses the question of new forms of housing for tourism in the Thuringian chain of lakes with a changing low-tech structure. The design is influenced by the existing shipyard and its rail-train system for ship repairs. The limited space for stationary components and the desire for solitude and proximity to nature and water lead to a mobile building design, leveraging the potential of XS.

XS is taken literally. Individual rooms such as bedrooms, dining rooms, kitchens, etc. are reduced to a minimal size of 2.66 m x 1.16 m, or 2.16 m external dimensions. These individual rooms are located on a mobile base, can be moved by two people, and travel on the rails using a train system. Four individual rooms complement each other to form a group ("cluster") and can thus form a house – but can also stand alone. This meets the requirements of a changing number of users (couples, families, and groups). This concept can be understood as an experiment in urban living, which requires modified spatial structures due to demographic change and changing lifestyles. For example, it would be possible to "add" different rooms, share them, and then "remove" them when they are no longer needed. This not only varies the number of sleeping spaces, but also allows holiday village guests to book additional amenities such as a sauna, library, or cinema on a daily basis. The result is a flexible, "breathing" structure.
