THE FRAGMENTED CASTLE
Projekt: luce nel castello, Umbau einer Burg Jahr: 2018, Typ: offener internationaler Wettbewerb Programm: Museum, Art-Hotel, Restaurant, Ateliers Größe: 8.500m2, Architektur: Opposite Office, Team: Benedikt Hartl, Finn Fukas, Ort: Favignana, Sizilien Bauherr: Stadt Favignana
The Fragmented Castle is a redevelopment project in Favignana, Sicily. It includes a museum, an art hotel, artists' studios, and a restaurant. This spatial program is located within the old castle walls. Instead of constructing a new building, we are opening up the existing castle and returning it to the community. A complex interior sculpture, opening to the sky, allows light to penetrate the massiveness of the castle.

The concept is based on three principles:
- RESPECTING the existing structure and the landscape
- INTERTWINING Christian and Arab history
- CONTINUING TO BUILD with minimal incisions and volumetric implants

We are breaking the solidity and hermetic unity of the castle, thus connecting art and hotel. You live with the art. You live in the art! The concept is a layering and condensing of history. The history of the castle is closely linked to an architectural blend of Christian and Muslim influences.

The design concept is a composition of contrasts, combining harmony and dissonance between natural and artificial, ancient and contemporary. The blend of "old" (tuff) and "new" (regional mountain marble) creates an inspiring atmosphere for artists and visitors and offers the potential to become one of the most renowned artistic reflection centers in the international scene.
