NSTMACHTSPRACHL

project: installation year: 2011  team: Benedikt Hartl, Carina Thurner

The interactive audiovisual installation by Benedikt Hartl and Carina Thurner plays with the myth of the “act of creation” in art. Where does art begin? Where does it end – or does it ever truly end?

The cultural project “nst macht sprach” is based on a creative process that exposes itself in every attempt to bypass it. To skip the creative process is to shift the boundaries of the concept of art – perhaps to the point of complete dissolution.

A tangle of pipes creeps through an underground garage, expanding as if breathing. Wrongly placed? Or exactly where it belongs? If we do not want the concept of art to be stretched to the point where it dissolves into arbitrariness, we must ask ourselves: What remains then?

Art is not the “quality” of a work. Art is the form into which something is cast – the way in which a work presents itself to its audience. It is the moment when something steps out of mere existence into conscious presence.

Art leaves you speechless.
