SLAWA UKRAJINI
Project: Transformation of the Angel of Peace Monument for the Architecture Week Year: 2022 Type: Temporary installation Architecture: Opposite Office Team: Zina Arborranu, Benedikt Hartl Location: Friedensengel, Prinzregentenstraße, Munich
The seventh Architecture Week (A7) animates Munich’s urban space and locations throughout the region with a range of small and large events, interventions, and actions. For the seventh time, the Association of German Architects (BDA) is hosting an Architecture Week, running from June 25 to July 1, 2022, dedicated to “urban life” — and with it, the question of how our relationship with, and awareness of, the private and public spaces of the city have changed. As a cooperation partner, the Bavarian Association of Landscape Architects (bdla Bayern) will also contribute with its own program highlights.
The Friedensengel (Angel of Peace) is an important landmark in Munich. Positioned along the visual axis of Prinzregentenstraße and the Luitpold Bridge, and located directly next to the Russian Consulate General, it serves as a significant point of orientation in the city. Today, this peace memorial feels oddly out of place in light of the horrific images reaching us from Ukraine.
With the installation Slawa Ukrajini (Glory to Ukraine), we aim to dedicate the peace monument to the people of Ukraine. For the one-week Architecture Week organized by the BDA, we temporarily removed the statue of the Angel of Peace from its victory column and transformed the monument into an Anti-Peace Monument.
Official permits for this intervention have been obtained and can be viewed here:

During the reconstruction period, we showcased the work of Ukrainian architects. Instead of engaging with Munich’s urban space, the exhibition focuses on the urban space of Ukraine. Twenty young Ukrainian architects sent us postcards with sketches of their favorite buildings.
