UTO·PIE MOBIL
Project: Mobile Vehicle as a Utopian Space for Exchange Year: 2025 Type: Temporary Installation Architecture / Self-Build: Opposite Office in collaboration with Finn Fukas Team: Finn Fukas, Benedikt Hartl Location: Mobile
A Mobile Laboratory for Thinking and Speaking about the Future. The Uto(pia-)mobile is a speculative vehicle of imagination – a mobile laboratory for thinking and speaking about a society to come. It invites two people to draw closer to each other – head to head, beneath a glass dome through which the gaze falls into the open sky.
The two cannot see each other – but their voices meet at the acoustic center of the dome. It acts like a sound bubble, a floating atmosphere for thoughts, doubts, and dreams. At head height, a loudspeaker is embedded, from which a utopian voice speaks: it asks questions and opens up spaces.
Thus begins a conversation – anonymous, radically open, without eye contact, but with deliberate listening. A space for thinking beyond assumptions. An invitation not just to imagine utopia, but to experience it.
The architecture of the Utomobile is ritualistic, almost liturgical: symmetrical, floating, reduced. Its outer shell reflects the world – fractured, distorted, like a mirror image of the future. Smooth metal surfaces meet organically rooted wheels and supports – somewhere between Archigram, Baroque theater, and a nomad’s tent.
The Utomobile is not an object – it is a state of being. It can be compactly disassembled and is transported from market square to market square, from place to place. Its mission: to spark encounters – in public space, in states of exception, in thought experiments. It creates a place that steps out of the world for a brief moment – and in doing so, imagines a new one.
